La Galerie D’Este est fière de présenter Petite Mort – grande mort, quatrième exposition solo de Paul Bourgault en ses murs et la première dans laquelle le peintre ne fait usage d’aucune référence photographique. Cette prise de position s’est définie suite à la lecture des écrits de David Hockney sur l’utilisation de lentilles par les peintres depuis la Renaissance et l’influence de celles-ci sur notre perception du monde visible, une influence qui perdure jusqu’à ce jour.
Dans cette nouvelle série, Bourgault se présente à nous en tant qu’artiste naïf, tel un outsider. Jouant au moderniste des premiers temps, il a banni de son atelier l’image photographique ainsi que toute habileté manuelle contribuant à une virtuosité technique. Ce personnage qu’il a créé nous présente un réseau de lignes définissant des entités, des corps, qui s’attirent, se repoussent et se rencontrent, sans qu’il n’y ait de frontières nettes entre eux.
Aussi différentes puissent-elles nous sembler à première vue, les nouvelles œuvres de Bourgault sont structurellement, thématiquement, et chromatiquement en continuité avec les préoccupations et les explorations picturales pour lesquelles il est connu. La composition serrée et l’utilisation de couleurs saturées, éléments distinctifs de son travail, se déploient ici en alternances rythmiques, laissant visible le savoir-faire de l’artiste tout en échappant à une évidente précision ou froideur. Il n’a pas abandonné la figuration, mais l’aborde plutôt selon le concept de designo, marqué par le tracé et l’intention.
Né en 1967 à Québec, Paul Bourgault est un artiste autodidacte qui vit et travaille à Montréal où vous le trouverez assurément dans son atelier. En 2012, le travail de Bourgault a été présenté en solo à la foire Art Toronto ainsi que dans une exposition collective organisée par l’Association des galeries d’art contemporain (AGAC) à la foire Scope à New York. Les oeuvres de l’artiste se retrouvent dans plusieurs collections publiques et privées, incluant la collection Prêt d’oeuvres d’art du Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec.

Galerie D’Este is proud to present Petite mort – grande mort, Paul Bourgault’s fourth solo exhibition at the gallery and the first in which the artist’s paintings contain no photographic references. The artist was inspired to take this step after reading David Hockney’s writings on the use of lenses by painters since the Renaissance and its influence on our perception of the visual world, an influence which persists today.
In this new series, Bourgault stages himself as a naïve artist, an outsider. Playing the part of an early modernist, he discarded from his studio anything having to do with the photographic image and technical virtuosity. This personnage he created mapped out the flow of energy from bodies meeting, blending into one and other, in friendship and love to bring warmth and grit to Hard-Edge painting.
However different the new work may seem to be at first glance, these new paintings are structurally, thematically, and chromatically in continuity with the concerns and explorations that have informed Bourgault’s image-making since the beginning. He has not abandoned figuration, but rather has gone in the direction of designo, by privileging line and mental concept.
The emphasis on tight composition and the use of saturated colors for which the artist is known is brought to the fore in these rhythmic alternations that leave some seams showing, avoiding overt precision or coldness.
Born in Quebec in 1967, Paul Bourgault is a self-taught artist currently living and working in Montreal. Recently, Bourgault’s work has been shown in a solo presentation at Art Toronto in 2012 and in a group exhibition at Scope NY in New York City organized by the Contemporary Art Galleries Association (AGAC). The artist’s works feature in numerous public and private collections, including the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec’s CPOA collection. The artist can be found in his Mile-End studio daily.
