Alors que le Cambodge faisait ses adieux à l’ancien roi Norodom Sihanouk, j’ai eu la chance de pouvoir être plongé dans cette atmosphère de deuil national. Dans les années 1970, l’appel de Pékin en faveur des Khmers Rouges a fait du roi un des principaux acteurs de leur victoire, ce qui lui a conféré une place tout à fait particulière et importante dans l’histoire de ce pays.
En ce moment de commémorations nationales donc, il m’a semblé pertinent de saisir, au hasard de mes pérégrinations, des « Regards » parmi ceux qui avaient « VU ». D’un côté ou d’un autre, peu m’importait : ils demeurent pour toujours les témoins d’un des plus atroces moments d’inhumanité perpétrés par « l’homme ». Ainsi, il me semble crucial que, à l’intérieur de cet ensemble de portraits, apparaissent les deux derniers survivants du camp S21 – le plus grand centre de torture Khmers Rouges, animé par le terrible commandant Dutch.

At the time when Cambodia was bidding farewells to the old king Norodom Sihanouk, I have been lucky enough to be immersed in this atmosphere of national mourning. In the seventies, Beijing’s call to support the Khmer Rouge made of the king one of the principal actors of their victory, he then acquired an extremely specific and active role in the history of the country.
During these national commemorations, it seemed relevant to me to catch, along my random peregrinations, the “visions” of those who HAD SEEN. From one side or another, it didn’t really matter to me: they remain forever the witnesses of one of the most atrocious moments of inhumanity committed by the “human kind”.
Thus, I think it is crucial that, within this set of portraits, appear the last two survivors of the S21 camp – the biggest Khmer Rouge torture center, led by the terrible commander Dutch.
